Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
The aims of the teaching in the subject are:
- Illustrate the relationship between the structures and properties of the substances (metals, plastics, aluminosilicates, rocks).
- Characterize structure and defects of metallic materials, their influence on the behavior and properties of metals.
- Characterize the structure and describe the production of ceramics and glass.
- Explain what is the structural nature of the utility properties of concrete.
- Describe the structure of plastics and explain their properties based on external conditions (temperature, pressure).
- Classify the structural differences of crystalline, nanostructured and amorphous substances within the Hosemann conception of paracrystallinity

Summary
The lecture discusses metal materials and three large groups of non-metallic materials: ceramics and minerals, plastics and carbonaceous materials. The main emphasis is placed on the structure of the materials. The wide range of substances described allows listeners to get an idea of the connections between solids and their properties (mechanical, electrical, magnetic, etc.) even under extreme conditions. Attention is paid to the regularity (organization) of the internal structure of the materials and the various forms of their disturbance as well as to the influence of this disturbance on the properties of the substances.
