Předmět navazuje na znalosti studenta z matematiky, fyziky, optoelektroniky a integrované optiky. Posluchač si osvojí fyzikální principy a metody popisu fotonických struktur a seznámí se s jejich aplikacemi.

Subject syllabus:

Course content: - Photonic crystals: the electromagnetic field in a periodic environment, the variation approach in electromagnetic theory, symmetry, translation, photonic band structure. - 1D photonic crystals: stratified media, Brillouin zones, evanescentn modes, partial photonic band gap. - 2D and 3D photonic crystals: the system of dielectric and metal rods and tubes, 3D photonic crystals and complete photonic band gap. - Defects in photonic crystals: the influence of point and line defects. - Application of photonic crystals: waveguide crossing, splitters and couplers based on photonic waveguides. - Metamaterials: superlenses, delay lines, other components based on photonic crystal structures. - Photonic crystal fibers: description of electromagnetic waves in mikrostructured fibers, basic transmission properties. - Special types of microstructured fibers and their applications of crystal: birefringent and nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, supercontinuum generation, dispersion enginnering, sensors, etc.
