Summary

Within the subject, which includes lectures, theoretical exercises and laboratory measurements, a basic knowledge of optics will be developed based on the use of optical diagnostic methods. Methods of measuring refractive index, phase changes and changes of polarization state, and measurements of length, displacement and surface topography, respectively, will be included. Furthermore, the methods based on the interaction of optical radiation with a medium, when the carrier of information is radiation spectrum, will be included. In a few laboratory measurements, the practical application of some of the methods will be demonstrated. Measurement of the refractive index using a refractometer and polarization reflectometer, distance measurements using aMichelson interferometer and measurement of the spectra with a compact spectrometer, will be included.
