Collect the basic physical principles and laws of optoelectronics Describe, clarify and interpret the particular natural phenomena in the field of optoelectronics Apply the simple mathematical methods for describing the corresponding phenomena in the field of optoelectronics Illustrate obtained knowledge in the frame of the easy applications

Summary

The subject is focused on the coherent and incoherent sources for optical communication systems, their basic principles of activity, structure and circuit solutions. The final part is devoted to the introduction to optical waveguide stuctures, as planar as fibers.

Subject syllabus:

- Introduction: Importance. - Sources of optical radiation -- Lasers: Fundamentals of laser action, active environment, population inversion, optical resonator. -- Types of lasers: gas lasers, liquid lasers, chemical lasers, solid state lasers - semiconductor lasers, laser applications. -- Electroluminescent (LED) diodes. - Propagation of optical radiation -- Planar dielectric waveguides -- Fibre-optic waveguides: total internal reflection, attenuation, dispersion, measuring characteristics of optical fibers, materials of optical fibers and their production, optical cables. - Optical Communications -- Free-space communications. -- Fibre-optic communication systems. - Detectors of optical radiation -- Characteristic parameters of the detectors. -- Photoelectric detectors, semiconductor detectors - PIN diode, avalanche photodiode. -- Noise of detectors.
