Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
To list the overview of the basic methods of surface treatment materials. Explain the principles of individual methods and their application in terms of the appropriateness of procedures for the materials. Propose optimal procedures for surface treatment in order to increase the resistance of the analyzed material.

Subject syllabus:
1. The surface of the material and its properties.
2. Protective coatings and division finishes.
3.Surface treatment of metals: corrosion and corrosive environments, phase metal-gas interface, the metal-electrolyte and their properties
4. Methods of treatment and surface preparation: mechanical, chemical and electrochemical, organic coatings and plastic, thermal spraying, glassy and ceramic coatings
5. Selected experimental methods of studying the surface layers of materials: X-ray and electron microscopy and diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron microprobe analysis, atomic force microscopy
6. Measurement of mechanical properties of surfaces: nanohardness and microhardness, roughness, fracture toughness, resistance to mechanical attack
