Summary

The course provides a comprehensive insight into the world of inorganic nature through two interconnected geological disciplines. Students will explore the crystal structure and physicochemical properties of minerals, understanding their genesis and system classification principles. The instruction further builds on the formation, composition, and classification of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. A key emphasis is placed on the technical applications of mineral resources in practice and mastering practical sample identification using macro-diagnostic methods. Professional Knowledge By completing the course, the student gains a comprehensive overview of the crystallographic properties and internal structure of minerals, as well as their genetic types and classification systems. They will understand in detail the petrogenetic processes behind the formation of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks and acquire knowledge of their mineralogical and chemical composition. At the same time, they will gain an overview of the possibilities for technical and industrial application of selected types of minerals and rocks. Professional Skills The student learns to reliably identify common minerals macroscopically based on their key physical properties, such as cleavage, hardness, luster, color, or density. Based on macro-diagnostic descriptions, they can recognize and correctly classify major rock types. They will be able to work independently with mineralogical and petrological keys, atlases, and professional literature, and evaluate raw material properties regarding their specific application in technical and civil engineering practice. General Competencies The student develops the ability to independently and systematically describe natural materials based on direct observation. They acquire the skill to apply theoretical geological knowledge when solving practical engineering and technical tasks, and can logically link theoretical knowledge of the internal structure of substances with their real-world behavior in practice.
