Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The first part of this course is dedicated to selected mathematical techniques in geosciences in connection with information technology development. These problems can arise from other courses as well as from practice. The basics of algorithmization of the selected problems with their consecutive program realization using the VBA programming language within the MS Excel environment will be taught. The main emphasis lays in explanation of fundamental principles of selected numerical methods and of their general properties. The students learn how to decide which procedure is a suitable tool for solving a specific problem. An important ingredient of the course is algorithmic implementation of the selected basic numerical methods. The second part of the course deals with the methodology of mathematical data processing in geosciences; the basic properties of natural objects and modelling of these objects, exploratory data analysis, the basics of geostatistics, interpolation of a function and with the way in which to understand these notions from both theoretical and practical points of view. The basic methods of collecting and analysing geo-data are introduced. The students are taught how to use these general methods to solve the problems arising from other courses of their study and from practice.

Summary
