Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
Knowledge and comprehension of genesis and classification of rocks. Recognize and describe rock textures and structures. Students should learn:
Collect fundamentals of research and classification of rocks Describe, clarify and interpret processes of rock cycle Apply analytical methods to describe rocks Ilustrate knowledge in simple examples of utilization of rock

Summary
Genetic criteria for classification of rocks. Petrography of igneous rocks with – current classification (IUGS). Chemical classification of metamorphic rocks – principles of genetic classification, modelling of metamorphic processes (petrogenetic lattices).

1. Introduction, the Earth crust and its chemical composition.
2. Processes of rock formation
3. Regularities of the origin of igneous rocks.
4. Classification principles on the basis of phase (mineral) composition and chemical composition of rocks
5. The role of magmatic rocks for basic and applied geological research.
6. Sedimentary rocks – origin.
7. Classification of siliciclastic sediments.
8. Classification of chemical sediments.
8. Classification of biochemical sediments.
9. The genesis of metamorphic rocks
10. Physical and chemical factors participating in metamorphic processes.
11. Classifications of metamorphic rocks.
