Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of this subject is acquisition of knowledge about BAT technologies in the area of waste management together with landfilling. Operation systems of landfills – monitoring (on-line systems). Technology for waste minimization, methods for monitoring of environmental loads (underground water, gasses, noice), technology for soil decontamination. Utilization of biogass and relationship to the biologically degradable wastes.

Summary

The subject builds on basic information gathered during the study. It focuses on the issues of site selection, landfill design, landfill waste management and landfill closure technology with subsequent rehabilitation. Landfill legislation. Technology to minimise environmental risks from landfill. Online methods to monitor the impact of the landfill on the surrounding area (emissions, nuisance — groundwater contamination, risk analysis). Characteristics of major pollutants (POPs, VOCs) — migration of risk elements and major anions. Optimisation of waste management in landfill – energy use of biogas, optimisation of the BRO and BRKO management process. BAT technology. Geochemical properties of materials used for landfill rehabilitation. Soil and waste decontamination technologies — thermal methods, physical-chemical methods, biodegradation technologies, electrochemical methods. Methods for assessing AMD production and the technological possibilities for minimising it.
