Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The objective is comprehension of clay mineral´s crystal structure, its characteristics, clasification systems, genesis of clay minerals and its research methods. Students should learn: Collect basic principles of clay mineral characteristics and classification. Describe, clarify and interpret natural processes of mineral cycle. Theoretically know basic analytical methods for clay minerals research. Ilustrate knowledge in examples of describing and utilization of clay minerals.

Summary

The course introduces students to the structures and detention powers of clay minerals - sheet silicates, on which stands the modern classification of the mineral class. Further explains the basic properties of clay minerals: iontexchange, sorption. Other topics discussed: Genesis, clays in the early stages of the Earth and solar system. Clay minerals and their (possible) role in the formation of living matter. Methods of identification, treatment of the internal structure of clay minerals, clay minerals such as environmental resources, the role of clay minerals in soils, the use of alternative agrotechnologiích. Physical properties (plasticity, binding capacity, thixotropy). Reaction with organic compounds. Technical use in industrial sectors.
