Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Goal of the subject is to provide knowledge to the university student, so he/she will be able to understand given points at issue good enough to analyse its content, to realise synthesis of the acquired information and its evaluation. This sciential base allow student to compare results of the synthesis, propose modifications and solve the problems of coal petrology.

Teaching methods

Lectures
Individual consultations

Summary

Preconditions of the origin of coal seams, processes of transformation of plant matters into peat – peat mosses, (biochemical phase), the geochemical phase of coal origin – metamorphosis, influences of radioactive elements and overlying rocks. Coalification parameters. The macropetrographical classification of brown and hard coal, micropetrographical classification of brown and hard coal, (macerals, maceral groups, intermediate types), microlithotypes. Genetic types of coal – humites, sapropelites, liptobiolites. Physical-mechanical properties of coal (colour, brightness, fracture, brittleness, density, hardness, strength). The chemical-technological properties and classification of brown and hard coal. The influence of natural conditions and coal alterations. The evaluation of coke and some carbonaceous matters from the standpoint of coal petrology.
