Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The main objective of the subject is to acquire basic knowledge of technical means, technologies and methods of opening, extraction, processing and distribution of oil and gas. The aim is to provide students with an overall overview of the topic, where the individual disciplines will be discussed in detail within the specific subjects of the follow-up study. Introduction to hydrocarbon extraction will also include an elementary gas and oil production project management, including an analysis of safety and environmental risks.

Extraction of oil and gas deposits, the methods of production. Offshore and offshore exploration and exploitation. Calculation of oil and gas reserves. Exploration and production wells. Production equipment. Workover of production wells. Secondary and enhanced methods of recovery. Collection, processing and transport of oil and gas. Unconventional resources of oil and gas. Impacts of oil and gas extraction on the environment. Management of exploration and exploitation projects, risk management, health and safety.Importance of oil and gas for developed economies.

Subject syllabus:

1.Introduction to the subject, history of oil and gas production, the role of oil and gas exploitation in the state economy. 2.Properties of oil and natural gas, recovery of oil and gas deposits, reservoir deliverability and flow regimes, oil and gas production methods. 3.Overview of technology and processes of the gas and oil production. Offshore and onshore gas and oil exploration. 4.Standard types of gas and oil production, lifetime of the oil and gas deposits, calculation of hydrocarbon reserves. 5.Oil and gas exploration and production borehole design. Borehole execution, commissioning and standard operation. 6.Artificial lift methods, oil and gas production equipment, sucker rod pumping systems, submersible pumps, gas lifts. 7.Oil and gas well workover, sources of well damage, recovery technology and equipment needed for well repair and maintenance. 8.Secondary and enhanced oil and gas recovery methods. 9.Equipment for oil and gas collection, processing, transport and distribution. Pipeline systems, pipes, valves and fittings in the oil and gas industry. 10.Oil and gas production measurement devices and methodology, oil and gas storage facility. 11.Unconventional oil and gas resources. Shale gas, oil sands, coal bed/mine methane, abandoned mine methane, methane hydrates. 12.Environmental impacts of the oil and gas production. 13.Project management of the gas and oil exploration and exploitation projects. 14.Risk management of the gas and oil exploration and exploitation projects, health and safety management.
