Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The objective of the course is to acquaint students with the operation of production wells and with the requirements for their operation and maintenance. Part of the course is to define the types, extent and frequency of workover on oil, gas and underground gas storage facilities. Further, the course is focused on possible non-plan repairs of wells as well as on modern methods of increasing oil and gas recoverability by means of technical improvement of the well completion. Students will be acquainted with the basic causes of failures at production and injection boreholes and methods of proper workover. For planned operations, they will learn the methodology of allocating the necessary resources and capacities for repair. In the case of unplanned failures, they will learn how to analyse the reasons of the problems and how to solve them. Further, they will be acquainted with methods of liquidation of boreholes and with specific problems in geothermal wells. They acquire elementary information about quality management systems and related risks. Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of standard maintenance, repair and operation of gas and oil wells, knowledge of the necessary technology and maintenance technology for proper well operation. Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of standard workover of gas and oil wells and knowledge of the necessary maintenance technology for proper well operation. Graduates can identify the nature of the problem of given production well, find the root of the failure and actively participate in the design and implementation of technical workover.

Oil and gas production and injection boreholes - basic types. Repairs and maintenance - planning of the necessary resources for the continuous operation of oil and gas wells. Drilling rigs for workover operation. Completion of oil and gas wells, production equipment. Causes of damage and reasons of wear of submersible production equipment. Basic types of repairs and basic processes of well maintenance. Methods of improving of the well recovery. Modern methods of repair and maintenance of probes and openings of new mining horizons. Safety regulations and standard operating procedures for oil and gas well workover, emergency plans. Liquidation of boreholes and production wells. Remediation of the impacts of drilling and production activities. Workover design. Specific problems and repair and maintenance requirements for geothermal wells. Quality management systems and management of safety and environmental risks.

Subject syllabus:

1. Production and injection oil and gas wells - standard oil and gas deposits, UGS, unconventional gas deposits, geothermal wells. 2. Well workover – planning and cost management. 3. Drilling rigs for workover and services, technical equipment and technologies. 4. Oil and gas wells completion, oil and gas extraction equipment. 5. Causes of damage and reasons of wear of completion of the boreholes. 6. Oil and gas recovery methods – intensification work, chemical methods. 7. Oil and gas recovery methods - intensification work, mechanical-dynamic methods, hydraulic fracturing. 8. Modern methods of repair and maintenance of wells and openings of new production horizons - coil tubing, radial drilling. 9. Safety regulations and standard operating procedures for underground repair of wells, emergency plans and emergency preparedness. 10. Liquidation of wells and boreholes. Remediation of impacts of drilling works and hydrocarbon production activities. 11. Workover design - project preparation, geological part of the project, technical part, examples. 12. Specific problems and requirements for repair and maintenance of geothermal wells - effects of corrosion, temperature, scaling. 13. Quality management systems in general, ISO 9000 standards, revision, dedicated technical equipment - introduction. 14. Security and environmental risk management systems, legal requirements, documentation and records.
