Summary

Students are introducing with the surface mining of rock blocks for a rough and noble stone-cutting industry. The subject deals with the technology of cutting, drilling, blasting, transport of mined blocks, mining technology in quarries, processing of blocks, splitting technology for treatment of mined blocks and accompanying processes.

Subject syllabus:

Syllabus of lectures: 1. Stone, history of human use of stone and its role in the development of human society. Types of rocks suitable for rough and noble stone production and their classification according to various criteria. Occurrences of the main types of natural stones in the Czech Republic and examples of quarries mining stone blocks for HKV and UKV. 2. The concept of block mining. Factors influencing block mining. Mining in soft and hard materials. Basic parameters of quarries and working sections in block mining. 3. Technology of processing blocks for rough stone production. Types of stoneware products for rough stoneware production and its characteristics. 4. Technology of block processing for noble stone production. Types of stoneware products for noble stoneware production and its characteristics. 5. Stone quarrying, from history to the present. 6. Quarrying of stone by drilling. Quarrying of stone with rope saws. 7. Quarrying of stone by cutting with circular saws and chain saws. 8. Quarrying of stone by means of blasting works. Quarrying of stone with cevamite, its use for mining and processing of blocks. Advantages, disadvantages and uses. 9. Specific methods of stone block mining (water jet, thermal cutting…) 10. Movements of blocks and products - aids and tools for manual and mechanical handling of blocks and products. 11. Manual and machine processing of stone, used tools and implements. 12. Mechanization of stone production. Production lines for continuous and discontinuous stone production. 13. Water and sludge management in stonemasonry operations 14. Environmental protection in HUKV and environmental protection tools in mining.

Mandatory attendence participation: Participation in 80% of the exercises is mandatory. Compulsory participation in three computer exercises. Compulsory participation in one professional excursion. Preparation of a term paper on the assigned topic. Any absence from the exercises must be duly excused (by a doctor or other official document, by e-mail or by phone).
