Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Student is acquainted with theoretical fundamentals of gravitational separation and on the basis of acquired knowledge he / she is able to estimate and propose a suitable separation method for a given raw material. He is able to perform basic technological calculations.

Summary

The course provides an overview of the theoretical foundations of gravitational processes applicable to bulk materials processing and introduces possible applications of these processes. Attention is paid to used machinery and calculations of basic technological parameters.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: I. Introduction The importance of adjustment of raw materials. The distribution of basic treatment processes of raw materials. Technological process with and without separation. II. Gravity separation. 1. Gravity separation of raw materials, theoretical foundations, grains movement in the physical environment, the Rittingers theory . Gravitational adjustability. 2. Separation in suspensions. The principle and the possibility of separating in a suspension. Properties of weighting materials and suspensions, types of using. Static gravity separation in organic liquids and aqueous solutions of salts. The main types of equipment used for static separation in suspensions. Control of suspension density, losses of weighting material. Preparation and regeneration of suspensions, gravity and magnetic recovery. Evaluation of separation in suspensions. 3. Separation in the ascending and descending turns of water flow (Separation using jigs). Analysis of processes run in the field of jig, derivation of the movement velocity of grain in individual stages of separation process. Methods of producing alternating upward and downward flow of water. Methods of products discharging from the jig. Rating jigs in terms of their arrangement in the technological process. Rating of separation in jigs. 4. Separation in hydrocyclones (using centrifugal forces). Forces acting on the grain in the hydrocyclone. Procedure of separation using a low and high pressure hydrocyclones. Separation in hydrocyclones by using a suspensions. 5. Separation in the stream of water on an inclined plane. Analysis of forces affecting the grain. Separation in chutes, in an oscillating table, in spiral separators, in conical separators. 6. Separating in the ascending flow of separative media. 7. Pneumatic separation. Pneumatic jigs and oscillating table. Fluid separation. Exercise: 1. Evaluation of gravity treatability. Preparation of floating liquids, determination of liquid density (hydrometer, pycnometer, Mohr scales). Realization of coal floating analysis of different grain size classes. Evaluation of floating analysis in the form of curves in M and the HR diagram. Cumulative treatability curve in M and HR diagram. Floating of fine grain fractions in a separating funnels. Determination of the treatability of the evaluated sample and individual grain size classes. 2. Rating of weighting materials and suspensions. Determination of density of solid phase. Calculation of volume and mass concentration of solid and liquid phases. Determination of particle size composition of weighting material (wet grain size analysis, sedimentation analysis). 3. Laboratory separation at hydrocyclones (at the oscillating table and jig). Determination of yields of separation products. Rating separation efficiency - Yields - Tromp’s dividing curves - Grumbrecht
