Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Graduates of the course will gain information on the basic methods of mineral extraction and their effects on the environment, determination of the hazards of old mine workings and the possibility of their rehabilitation. The main focus will be on the possibilities of using old mines and mine workings, including practical examples. Attention will also be paid to the social and economic aspects of mining decommissioning and the current legislation related to mining decommissioning. Students will be introduced to case studies of specific projects. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to evaluate the potential of abandoned mines for their subsequent use.

Summary

Recently, there has been a massive increase in the closure of mines, which if they no longer have a use, must be liquidated according to the applicable legislation. However, foreign experience shows that deep mines in particular have considerable potential in their further use, e.g. for energy storage, waste disposal, underground laboratories, showrooms, museums, etc. Within the course, students will learn about the individual possibilities of using mining company sites, including case studies, but also with the issues associated with the termination of mining and mine liquidation.
