Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
Students will acquire knowledge of key stages of development of methods and equipment of geodesy and cartography. It will gain a basic overview of the interrelationship between geodesy and cartography and their link to other fields of scientific and technical practice.
Knowledge of the history of the field of study will contribute to a faster and deeper understanding of its current methodological and instrumentation base.

Summary
The development of geodesy and cartography, and their working methods in individual centers of civilization in connection with other scientific, technical, cultural and other activities of society. Development of the institutionalization of geodetic and cartographic services.
The share of Czech technicians in the development of instruments and devices for geodetic and cartographic work. History of geodetic and cartographic works on the territory of the Czech Republic. Old and historical maps and atlases.

Subject syllabus:
1. Prehistory and antiquity in geodesy and cartography.
2. The middle ages in cartography (ecclesiastical, maritime, non-European cartography) and geodesy.
3. Discoveries and travelers, significant geodetic figures and expeditions.
4. Renaissance and reformation in geodesy and cartography.
5. Old and historical instruments and instruments for measuring basic geodetic quantities and for cartometric tasks.
6. Development of leveling, tachymetry, trigonometry and photogrammetry.
7. Development of instrumentation and methods of mining.
8. Detailed mapping of European countries, development of land registry in the territory of the Habsburg monarchy.
9. Old and historical cartographic works on the territory of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia (and Slovakia).
10. Institutional provision of geodetic and cartographic services in the past.
11. Significant producers of geodetic instruments and aids and significant cartographic houses, their history.
12. Historical methods of cartographic production, production and printing of maps.
13. Development of automation and digital methods in geodesy and cartography.
14. Significant map collections and archives, museums and geodetic artifacts in the landscape
