Summary
History and present of analog and digital printing techniques. Editing and designing of analogue and digital cartographic works, methods of creating of map compilation manuscripts and basic technological procedures of their publishing. Legislation in cartographic creation and production. Copyright of cartographic works. An important part is orientation in national and world digital cartographic works and data funds, including the EU INSPIRE initiative.
Expertise: The student understands the principles of creating and reproducing analog and digital cartographic works and is familiar with the basic technological procedures involved in their editing, design, preparation, and publication. They are familiar with current printing and typographic technologies, standardization in cartographic informatics, legislative requirements, and copyright protection issues. They are familiar with major national and international digital cartographic products and data collections, as well as the principles of the EU’s INSPIRE initiative.
Professional Skills: The student is able to design and produce a layout for a topographic or thematic map using digital technologies and apply the principles of cartographic editing and design. The student is able to select appropriate technological procedures for preparing cartographic works for reproduction and to utilize relevant digital cartographic data and data sources. When producing a cartographic work, they are able to take into account requirements regarding its content, graphic design, technical implementation, standardization, and legal protection.
General Competencies: Students independently and responsibly decide on the appropriate method for producing a cartographic work, taking into account its purpose, target audience, available data, technological capabilities, and the required quality of the result. They provide professional justification for their decisions, critically evaluate the limitations of the chosen solution, take into account the legal and ethical aspects of working with cartographic works and data, and assume responsibility for the quality of the resulting cartographic work. They clearly communicate the results of their professional activities and are able to coordinate individual professional tasks when creating more complex cartographic outputs.
