Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
The aim of this course is to introduce the fundamentals of technological process control, focusing on automatic and automated control systems of technological processes in the raw material industry. Students will be able to distinguish between different types of control systems, they will be able to design basic control circuits and will gain awareness of the Industry 4.0 concept.
Students will be able to define key automation concepts, describe the historical development and modern trends in this field, identify various types of sensors and actuators used in industrial automation. Explain the principles of automation in technological processes, interpret basic functions of control loops and PLCs, discuss the roles of SCADA and HMI systems. Apply knowledge of sensors, PLCs, and communication networks in the design of automated systems, demonstrate the use of control techniques and PLC programming. Analyze technological processes to identify and optimize key parameters, classify and compare different control methods. Design and assemble a basic automation system including sensors, actuators, and controllers, construct a simulation model to test systems. Assess the effectiveness of an automation system, interpret data from industrial processes, and recommend improvements or optimizations.

Summary
The course provides an overview of the area of automation of technological processes in industrial practice. The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the main concepts of automation and control systems. The course introduces students to the basics of technical cybernetics, informatics and automatic control.
First, students will learn logic control systems, logic functions, logic elements and combinational and sequential logic circuits, including minimization of logic functions. The second part of the course contains basic knowledge of linear control systems. An important part is the basic theory of feedback systems including the investigation of their stability, accuracy and quality of regulation. Attention is also paid to the main technical means, such as sensors and measuring technology, controllers and actuators used for regulation, etc. Last but not least, the course deals with specific cases of automation in technical practice and also the current approach in the form of Industry 4.0 is mentioned.
