Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

After completion of this subject students will understand basic characteristics of water environment, the evolving and categorization of freshwater communities, the pollution of water ecosystems by wastewater and some additional issues (acidification, eutrofication etc.).

Subject syllabus:

1. Limnology, origin and development of hydrobiology, geological and biotypological distribution of water, water cycle in nature. 2. Groundwater. 3. The process of groundwater pollution. 4. Standing water. 5. The cycle of substances in water. 6. Structure of stagnant water biocenoses 7. Running water 8. Surface water pollution. 9. Self-cleaning of watercourses. 10. Flow changes and the effect of flow adjustments. Technical changes of the flow profile. 11. Methods of revitalization of watercourses. Restoration of riparian vegetation. 12. Acidification of aquatic ecosystems. 13. Eutrophication of stagnant waters. 14. Wastewater treatment.
