Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Target competences lie in gaining new knowledge and its application in problem solving, observation, experiments and communication: - to characterize the basic features of aquatic microorganisms with regard to water supply, surface water and wastewater treatment plants; to understand phylogenetic relationships of individual groups, identify and name characteristic organisms of individual taxa and understand the importance of indicator microorganisms - to apply the gained knowledge in dealing with practical tasks in seminars, to consider the consequences of a phenomenon from the environmental, sanitary as well as economic points of view; to build a positive attitude to nature - to be able to work independently on the set tasks, to observe and objectively record the experiment results, to adhere to safe (aseptic) work principles when working with biological material and technical equipment - to be able to work with expert/academic texts, to be familiar with the expert terminology, to be able to synthetize the obtained experimental data and to justify own approach in dealing with a biological problem

Summary

The subject is focused on clarification of the position of aquatic microorganisms with regard to water supply, surface water and wastewater treatment plants in the system of living nature. Students will acquire information about morphology and physiology of basic groups of microorganisms in waters, about their ecological function and also about the influence of microbial populations on water quality. Part of the lectures is devoted to the practical use of microorganisms in water treatment technologies and their role as indicators of water quality in accordance with current legislation.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

Ongoing checks of students’ work are ensured via discussing the lecture topics; the practical competences are observed when working in the laboratory. To gain credits, students hand in records and completed tasks from the laboratory assignments. The course is completed by an examination, which may be scheduled having gained the initial credit. The examination is divided into a written and oral part.
