Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of the course is to introduce students with the water cycle in water supply from surface and groundwater collection through water treatment technologies for drinking, utility and technological through hygienic security, its distribution to wastewater management, including the possibilities of sewage and industrial wastewater treatment technologies and subsequent return back into the water cycle. Identify, evaluate and discuss parameters influencing the choice of water treatment technology or wastewater treatment technology.

Experimental work in labs


The course focuses on the protection of aquatic ecosystems, which requires not only the economical use of water resources but also the treatment of wastewater, ie sewage and industrial wastewater, to a level acceptable for discharge into the environment. With the development of society and the growing demands on the quantity and quality of water used, more and more emphasis is placed on the protection of water resources and increasing the efficiency of wastewater treatment. It also focuses on the context of floods and droughts, which also have a significant impact on aquatic ecosystems in terms of climate change.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

To obtain credits, students need to hand in correct laboratory protocols. Elaboration and presentation of semester work. The course is completed by a combined exam.


In the case of on-line teaching, teaching will take place in the university teaching system Moodle (lms.vsb.cz) or MS Teams.

Subject syllabus:

1. Global issues of the hydrosphere. World water resources. Availability of freshwater sources. International law, cooperation in water management. 2. Legal protection of water in the Czech Republic, protective zones of water sources, protected areas and territories for water accumulation, sensitive areas of surface waters, vulnerable areas. 3. Composition and properties of natural waters in terms of treatment technology based on quality indicators. Water abstraction and water distribution system. 4. Water treatment technologies - treatment of groundwater (deacidification, deironing, demanganization). 5. Water treatment technologies - treatment of surface waters (flocculation, sedimentation, filtration), hygienic water treatment (chlorination, ozonation, UV radiation). 6. Wastewater treatment - development and current state of wastewater treatment in the EU and the Czech Republic, classification of wastewater by origin, source, and composition. Pollution indicators and registers of releases and transfers of pollutants. 7. Wastewater treatment technologies - mechanical wastewater treatment. 8. Wastewater treatment technologies - aerobic wastewater treatment. 9. Wastewater treatment technologies - anaerobic wastewater treatment. 10. Modern water treatment and purification technologies - membrane processes (microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, electrodeionization). 11. Decentralized wastewater treatment, root sewage treatment plants. 12. Conditions for discharging wastewater (sewage, municipal, and industrial) into surface waters or sewerage, harmful substances in water (types, handling, emergency plan and accidents). 13. Climate change - consequences, adaptation, and mitigation measures (technical and non-technical solutions).

Mandatory attendence participation: Compulsory Attendance in Exercises. Elaboration and presentation of semester work.

Conditions for subject completion and attendance at the exercises within ISP: Compensation for mandatory participation in the ISP will be the elaboration of a semester paper on a topic assigned by the lecturer. The course is completed with an oral and written examination.
