Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The course introduces the basics of soil science as part of ecosystems and as environmental components. Teaching follows the geological objects (Mineralogy and Petrography, Geology) and creates a foundation for the study of soil protection. After completing it, the student is fully aware of the complex nature of the soil environment and multidisciplinarity in its study. The student is able to characterize the basic parameters of soil from a physical, chemical, physico-chemical, biochemical and biological point of view. The student understands the connection between natural conditions and soil conditions in the Czech Republic, which can characterize and is fully aware of why it is important to protect the soil.

Summary

The content of the course will be designed so that the content of all chapters included in it is explained on the basis of specific examples related to the issue of environmental protection in industry and explaining this issue. The study focuses on soil as a part of ecosystems and a component of the environment. Attention is paid to the issue of agricultural, forest and urban soils. As a basis for understanding soil processes, soil properties are studied from various perspectives (physical, chemical, physico-chemical, biochemical and biological). Attention is also paid to the characteristics of soils in the Czech Republic. The soil classification is based on the international classification of soils.

Subject syllabus:

Pedogenic factors. Weathering processes and pedogenic processes. Mineral phases and inorganic components in soils. Humus, humification processes. natural organic substances in soils. Soil composition. Grain size composition of soils, and its determination used for classification. Color soils. Chemical composition of soils and chemical properties of soils. soil sorption complex and sorption properties of soils. The biological component of soil, soil organisms. Measuring humidity. Soil air. Diagnostic soil horizons. Principles of soil classification and comparison of different classification systems. Soil classification based on the classification of FAO - UNESCO. Soil types, features and enhancements in nature. Relationships between soil types in the landscape. Horizontal and vertical soil pásmovitost. Paleopedology. Soil and ecological stability of landscape. Sampling and analysis of soils, soil water and soil air. Soil maps. exercise: Laboratory - determination of basic properties of soils. Soil maps.
