Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Graduating student will be able to find, identify and describe the various biota and habitats of the aquatic environment, to understand the natural processes taking place in and hydrobiocoenoses, to will be able to solve the anthropogenic load of aquatic ecosystems. Student will be able alsoto determine the aquatic organisms.

Summary

After completion of this subject students will understand basic characteristics of water environment, the evolving and categorization of freshwater communities, the pollution of water ecosystems by wastewater and some additional issues (acidification, eutrofication etc.).

Active student participation in laboratory and field exercises - lack of exercise can be replaced. The necessary theoretical training on exercise (verification of knowledge at the beginning of each exercise). The protocols specified tasks and essay on the subject in the required quality.

Subject syllabus:

1. Limnology , development of Hydrobiology , geological and biotypologické distribution of water , the water cycle in nature. 2. Groundwater - types of permeability rocks, groundwater circulation , distribution of groundwater chemical and physical properties of groundwater , groundwater biota . 3. The process of groundwater pollution - groundwater response of organisms to various types of pollution, groundwater remediation methods . 4. Standing water - the basic physical and chemical properties (density , viscosity, hydrostatic pressure , solar radiation , transparency, thermal regime , surface tension , electrical conductivity , redox potential , pH, water color ) . 5. Biogeochemical Cycles in water - cycle of oxygen , carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, iron and manganese , silicon. 6. Structure of stagnant water biota ( plankton , benthos , nekton , pleuston ) . 7. Running water - the basic physical and chemical properties. The structure of biota ( plankton , drift, phytobenthos , zoobenthos , nekton ) communities changes in the longitudinal profile of the flow under natural conditions . 8. The biological productivity of water and food chains in aquatic ecosystems . 9. Self-cleaning water flows - physical and chemical processes of self-purification , the impact of pollution on the occurrence of aquatic organisms, successional stage self-cleaning , dealing with emergency situations in the flow. 10. The process of surface water pollution - sources and types of pollutants (mineral and putrid sludge, toxic substances , radioactive substances , the heated waste water , waste water and oily substances and petroleum products , waste water with pathogenic organisms , contaminated water from landfills ) . 11. Acidification of aquatic ecosystems - sources of acidity , the effect of acidification on aquatic organisms . 12. Eutrophication of stagnant water - definition , causes eutrophication , the development of cyanobacteria and their toxicity , biological and technical measures to reduce eutrophication 13. Wastewater Treatment - Biological wastewater treatment. Technology for sewage treatment. 14. Sampling of waste water. 15. The use of organisms as biosorbents for wastewater treatment .
