Subject syllabus:

1. The current concept of toxicology, history, toxicology classification , characteristics of branches. The concept of toxicology in a broader context of science, the definition of basic terms, history. 2. Definition of terms. Toxic material and toxicity. Toxic effects (characteristics, formulations). Poison classification and their effects on organisms. Exposition. 3. Dose (the dose-effect relation). Interaction between toxic matters. Factors influencing toxic effect. 4. Methods of determining the toxicity of substances, biotransformation conversion. Biotransformation (principle, phase, factors affecting biotransformation). 5. Toxocinetics - interaction of a toxic substance with an organism (primary contact, absorption, distribution and transport of toxic substances in the body, excretion). 6. Toxicology at the level of molecules and cells. The mechanism of penetration of toxic substances through biomembranes. Effects of pollutants at the organ level (mechanism, effects, examples of substances). 7. Mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, reproductive and developmental toxicity. Methods for determining the level of exposure, exposure limits. 8. Significant inorganic pollutants and their effects on the body. Basic risk characteristics and toxicological properties of elements and inorganic compounds. 9. Significant organic pollutants and their effects. Basic risk characteristics and toxicological properties of organic compounds. 10. Safety in chemistry, law, information sources. Risks of working with poisons, flammable and explosive substances. 11. Disposal of chemical waste in the laboratory. Legislative regulations and documents defining the handling with chemicals, labour safety. Familiarization with information systems and resources in toxicology. 12. First aid for injuries and poisonings in the laboratory. 13. Current environmental issues.
