Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
Target competences lie in gaining new knowledge and its application in problem solving, observation, experiments and communication:
- to characterize the attributes of prions, viruses and bacteria, to understand phylogenetic relations of the different groups, to learn about and to term characteristic organisms of the individual taxons and to understand the significance of pathogenic as well as non-pathogenic species
- to apply the gained knowledge in dealing with practical tasks in seminars, to consider the consequences of a phenomenon from the environmental, sanitary as well as economic points of view; to build a positive attitude to nature
- to be able to work independently on the set tasks, to observe and objectively record the experiment results, to adhere to safe (aseptic) work principles when working with biological material and technical equipment
- to be able to work with expert/academic texts, to be familiar with the expert terminology, to be able to synthetize the obtained experimental data and to justify own approach in dealing with a biological problem

Summary
The course focuses on explaining the role of microorganisms in the system of live nature.
Students gain information on the morphology and physiology of non-cellular organisms, basic groups of microorganisms, their role in the nature and mutual relations of microbial populations with an overview of fundamental pathogenic as well as non-pathogenic strains of microorganisms.
Some lectures are dedicated to a practical utilization of microorganisms in industrial biotechnologies and their role in the formation and protection of the environment.
Compulsory literature:
Recommended literature:
Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester
Ongoing checks of students’ work are ensured via discussing the lecture topics; the practical competences are observed when working in the laboratory.
To gain credits, students hand in records and completed tasks from the laboratory assignments.
The course is completed by an examination, which may be scheduled having gained the initial credit. The examination is divided into a written and oral part.
E-learning
Other requirements
