Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Knowledge of mineral biotechnology, focusing on biocorrosion and effects of biodeteriogens on constructions and focusing on the application of biopolymers and bioreactors. Being able to distinguish different approaches to estimate and find best solutions for specific biocorrosion, biopolymers, and bioreactors issues. Students will be able to obtain information for work experience, demonstrate a general overview and evaluate the issue. Compare different approaches and the practical side of it. Being able to produce results and solve them independently. Demonstrate ability to communicate (active both writing and speaking), manage technical terminology.

Summary

The course deals in detail with the issue of mineral biotechnologies. Lectures focus on environmental biogenic processes, basic principles of mineral biotechnologies, biological-chemical methods of heavy metal recovery from industrial waste water, (bioaccumulation, biosorption, bioprecipitation), potential biological-chemical elimination of heavy metals from industrial waste water by sulphate-reducing bacteria. Application of sulphate-reducing bacteria and study of bacterial reduction of sulphates. Next, the course concentrates on the study of potential application of biogenic processes into technological procedures.
