Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The aim of the subject Waste Management is a detailed identification of the formation of selected types of waste and their disposal technologies. Based on resources it will be possible to evaluate and determine suitability of material utilization for each type of waste, including application of their handling.

Summary

The course provides the students with basic training in the area of waste disposal in general. The course deals in detail with the issue of waste utilization and disposal. The individual lectures focus on thermal processing of waste, biological methods of waste disposal, composting, waste dumping and physical-chemical methods of waste disposal.

Way of continuous check of knowledge in the course of semester

Students will include the information gained during a semester into their half-yearly presentations which will react to applications of the individual methods in the sphere of waste disposal. The subject is closed by granting a credit and by an examination.

Subject syllabus:

1. Basic legislation of waste management 2. Thermic methods of energy utilization and disposal of waste Facilities (boilers) for energy utilization and disposal of waste Facilities for cleaning of waste gases 3. Biological methods of waste processing Separation and composting of municipal bio-waste Course of composting and basic conditions of composting Optimization of the material composition of compost Disposal of bio-waste – possibilities of further utilization 4. Waste dumping Legal regulations for waste dumping Processes taking place in waste dumps Types of waste storable in waste dumps Body of a waste dump (drainage systems, dewatering, insulation foils, etc.) Composition of seepage water, waste dump gas (formation, collection, processing – utilization) 5. Physical-chemical methods of waste disposal Types of hazardous chemical waste Re-working of hazardous waste Solidification of waste
