To learn biological processes in treatment of municipal and industrial wastewaters. To understand principles of aerobic and anaerobic treatment of wastewaters. Composition of municipal wastewaters. Biological degradability of organic substances in wastewaters. Theory of growth and proliferation of microorganisms. Principles of aerobic, anoxic and anaerobic treatment of municipal and industrial wastewaters. Specific technology procedures used in biological treatment of wastewaters.

Subject syllabus:
1. Types of wastewaters. Determination of organic substances in wastewaters. Biological degradability.
2. Technology lines in big, medium-sized and small wastewater treatment plants.
3. Mechanical cleaning and settling of substances in waters.
4. Aerobic cleaning with mixed culture. Growth and proliferation of microorganisms. Growth curve. Kinetics of organis substances removal.
5. Activation process, activated sludge, basic method in cultivation of mixed culture. Hydraulic characteristics of activation.
6. Most important parameters of activation technology. Factors influencing activation efficiency.Sludge bulking.
7. Oxygenation capacity. Oxygen demand for activation. Transfer of oxygen into water. Types of aerators.
8. Overview of main technology modifications used in treatment by mixed culture in suspension.
9. Biological removal of nutrients. Nitrification and denitrification. Removal of phosphorus. Theory of bio-film processes. Composion and creation of biolfilms. Biological columns. Rotary reactors and reactors with combined biomass cultivation.
10. Theory of anaerobic treatment of wastewaters. Anaerobic reactors.
11. Comparison of aerobic and anaerobic procedures in biological treatment of wastewaters.
