Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Target competence on the basis of new knowledge and its application in communication: - to perceive biotechnology as a multidisciplinary scientific discipline, to learn about the current directions of its development focusing on state-of-the-art methods of genetic engineering; to characterize differences in the organization of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell genomes, to understand the meaning of modern methods based on DNA technologies on the grounds of identifying structural changes in cell genotypes - to consider the practical consequences of a phenomenon from the environmental, health as well as economic points of view and to justify the significance of new information on molecular genetics and genetic engineering for the society - to understand the principles of basic methods of genetic engineering leading to modifications of the existing microorganisms and thus to a synthesis of new products - ability to work with technical texts, to master specialist terminology, to be well informed about the contents of new genetic disciplines, to get to know the topical principles of world-wide databases and collections of microorganisms

Summary

The content of the subject builds on the acquired knowledge of biotechnology and expands the fundamentals in biological science. The own profile of the subject sees the status of modern biotechnology as a multidisciplinary discipline on the boundary of technical and biological sciences. The objective of the subject is to expand the knowledge of biotechnology with new approaches in biotechnological practice which are nowadays based on topical knowledge of genomics, proteomics and other disciplines of genetic engineering. Students are acquainted with cellular processes on a molecular level and with their mutual interaction at an origin of important biological macromolecules participating in genetic properties of organisms. The content of lectures is theoretical basics of common and more specialized methodical procedures applied in molecular-biological research, which complement modern technologies of genetic engineering asserted especially in the construction of transgenic microorganisms for specific technological applications in industry and environmental protection.
