Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences
Student gains knowledge concerning development of environment in macro mode. The subject acquaints student with political tools in branch of environmental protection and with tools for support of sustainable development.
Contents:
1. Definitions – environment, environmental protection, ecology,
environmental pollution and degradation. Changes in the environment
according to demographic, social and technical development, resources use,
renewable and non-renewable sources. Local, regional and global
environmental pollution, assimilation capacity of nature. Global
ecosystem, ecosystem services. Biodiversity, Convention on Biological
Diversity, genetic banks.
2. History of environmental protection. Basic strategies, development in
timeline, main features. Economical comparison of different environmental
strategies.
3. Sustainable development – definition, principles, documents. Agenda 21.
Scenarios of sustainable development (WBCSD).
4. Preventive strategy – principles, tools, proactive impact, win-win
strategy and its advantages.
5. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) – principle, Czech legislation, time
requirements, participants in EIA process, role of state administration,
local administration and public. EIA experts – qualification requirements,
formation of team for EIA process, methods for assessment.
6. Environmental audits – definition, legislation. Various types of
environmental audit, differences and common signs, description of audit
program and plan, participants. Auditors – qualification requirements,
formation of team for audit.
7. Waste minimization, cleaner production. Definition, description of CP
assessment project. Implementation in companies. Benefits of CP project
for environment and economics of company. IPPC – principle, Czech
legislation, BAT, BREF.
8. LCA (Life Cycle Assessment).
9. Environmental labels and declarations.
10.Environmental management systems – definition, basic features,
specifications. EMS certification – rules, possibilities, costs and
benefits. Accreditation of certification bodies. EMAS and ISO 14001 -
differences. Connection to other management systems (QMS, SMS, OHSAS
etc.). EPI’s, ISO 14031. CSR.
11.Voluntary agreements - reason, methodology, relation to the legislation,
benefits.
12.Environmental economy – basic terms, economical tools for environmental
protection, environmental accounting.

Summary
The subject Environmental Management Systems: Student gains knowledge from branch of environmental management, global scenarios of sustainable development (WBCSD), the Czech Republic scenarios, State Environmental Policy (CR), ecoefficiency – CP, clean technologies, BAT, BREF (IPPC), ecoefficiency indicators (WBCSD, ISO 14031).
In next step the subject Environmental Management Systems explains EMS (according to ISO 14001) as a managerial tool, integrated management systems, environmental reporting, CSR, life cycle assessment (LCA), environmental impact assessment (EIA) in the Czech republic and in the world etc.

For every seminar hour compulsory part is a presentation of seminar work. There is requested ability of students to present the chosen topics in PowerPoint and defend her/his opinion in discussion.
