Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The basic goal of the subject is acquaint the students with methodology of evaluation of environmental risks, the choice of decontamination technology qualified by the method of utilization of area and waste management for technological solution of brownfields. Acknowledgement: students prove theoretical and practical knowledge from remediation technologies and managing of their principles for choice of technology from the point of view to achievement of concentration limits on the basis of case studies. Skills: development of independence, strategy for decision making for choice of remediation technology.

Summary

Overview of industrial branches and their impact on environment (water, soil and contamination of buildings). Industrial branches – typical pollutants (European database system – Kloke lists). The basis physic-chemical, toxicological properties of pollutants, their mobility in environment. The evaluation of environmental risks: the definition, basic terms. The methodology for evaluation of risks, evaluation of hazardous properties o chemical matter and their mixtures. Evaluation of risks for terrestric and aquatic ecosystems. Case studies, the prediction of influence of chemical compounds on the basis of chemical structure (ECOSTAR), ecotoxicity tests. Principles of remediation technology. Procedure for evaluation of optimal technologies. Bioremediation technologies for soil decontamination. Technological possibilities (limits), optimization of technology, the request for protection of areas for decontamination. Remediation technology for underground water. Thermic methods – principles, possibilities, limits, pollutants. Physical and chemical methods for remediation technology – stabilisation/solidification. Principles, possibilities. Limits.
