Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Acquisition of skills and knowledge areas of the emerging environmental technologies for soil decontamination, waste, surface water and groundwater. Students are well versed in the basic legislation relating to ecological burdens, including basic principles and methodology of risk analysis.

Summary

Content of the course is focused on the field of dynamically developing environmental technologies for decontamination of soils and underground waters. Students will be acquinted also with basic legislation which has relationship to ecological burdens including methods for risk analysis.

Subject syllabus:

1. Introduction to the issue of environmental burdens: Causes, basic terms, types of pollutants, sources of information. 2. Legislative framework and financial aspects of removing contamination. 3. Basic terms and terminology of remediations. 4. The practical aspects of old ecological burdens, classification and division of remediation technologies. 5. Thermal remediation methods Combustion technology , thermal desorption systems , pyrolysis techniques, plasma ARC systems, vitrification technology. Evaluation of individual technologies. 6. Physical remediation methods I: The technology of verticall walls, methods of gas extraction (extraction of soil vapors - SVE), SVE support (air sparging technology, direct injection, concept of dynamic underground stripping, two-phase extraction method, technology, pneumatic and hydraulic breaking, supporting thermal processes). Evaluation of individual technologies. 7. Physical remediation methods II: Washout technologie, technology of extraction with solvent, extraction into macroporous polymers electrokinetic technology (elektrorecultivation). Evaluation of individual technologies. 8. Chemical and physico-chemical remediation technologies I: Dechlorination technologies: base-catalyzed decomposition (BCD), mechanochemical dehalogenation (MCD), dehalogenation with alkali metal glycolates, technology of solvating electrons, soudium method, chemical reduction in gas phase (GPRS). Evaluation of individual technologies. 9. Chemical and physico-chemical remediation technologies II: Stabilization and solidification processes, technologies using chemical redox processes, the radiolytic decomposition. Evaluation of individual technologies. 10. Chemical and physico-chemical remediation technologies III: Applications of nanotechnologies, in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), chemical oxidation ex situ, supercritical oxidation (SWCO), advanced oxidation processes (AOP), chemical reduction, solar photodegradations. Evaluation of individual technologies. 11. Biological remediation methods I: Basic conditions for the functioning of biodegradation technologies. Basic concepts and approaches. Division of bioremediation technologies. 12. Biological remediation methods II: Bioremediation in the suspension systém, aeration technology, biotransormations, bioimmobilisation, biostabilisation, biologically reactive barriers. Division of bioremediation technologies. 13. Biological remediation methods III: Solid-phase bioremediation, phytoremediation processes, bioslurping technology, the possibility of groundwater in situ remediation, natural attenuation methods. Evaluation of individual technology. 14. Combined remediation techniques, News and current trends in remediation technologies.
