Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the subject is to extend the knowledge of biological wastewater treatment. Describe the main technological elements, including their parameters. Explain in detail aerobic and anaerobic processes. Learn about the latest nutrient removal practices. Within the sludge management, pay attention to the sludge hygiene and the use of phosphorus.

Summary

This subject deals with the treatment of waste water by biological methods. The basis of the theory of aerobic and anaerobic treatment. Theory is applied to technological processes and technological equipment. Modern methods of nutrient removal are presented. Subject syllabus:

1. Waste waters, character of pollutants in waters, organic substances and their determination, composition and quantity of sewage water, micro-pollutants. 2. Technological lines of large, medium and small WWTP. Centralized and decentralized treatment, industrial waste water, mechanical treatment, coarse pre-treatment, suspension settling and thickening 3. Suspension settling and thickening, settling and thickening tanks, design of settling and settling tanks, technological parameters of tanks. 4. General principles of biological treatment processes, growth curve, kinetic principles of microorganism selection, substrate removal kinetics. 5. Principles of aerobic wastewater treatment, activated sludge, metabolism of organic compounds, removal of organic substances. 6. Basic methods of activated sludge cultivation, activation process, basic technological parameters, oxygen consumption, oxygen transfer to water. 7. Activation tanks aeration, pneumatic aeration, technological modifications of conventional activation systems, technological parameters, activation examples. 8. Biofilm reactors, properties of biofilm, sprayed biological columns, classification and parameters, rotary reactors, combined cultivation of biomass. 9. Biological nitrogen removal, nitrification, denitrification, activation systems of nitrogen removal, bioaugmentation, Anammox system 10. Biological removal of phosphorus, activation systems of phosphorus removal, common biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus, chemical removal of phosphorus. 11. Separation of activated sludge, separation properties of sludge and their influence, identification of filamentous organisms, and metabolic selection of sludge. 12. Settlement tanks, operation and control, technological parameters of tanks, membrane separation, design, advantages and disadvantages of membrane processes. 13. Anaerobic treatment processes, comparison of aerobic and anaerobic processes, principle of anaerobic decomposition, anaerobic water purification, reactors. 14. Treatment of sewage sludge, stabilization and sanitation, anaerobic stabilization, reactors, sludge gas, sludge water. 15. Properties and processing of anaerobically stabilized sludge, further hygienization, drying, combustion, phosphorus recovery from sludge.
