Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The subject deals with the minimisation of negative environmental impact of industry, reduction of emissions and contaminants and pollutants of all kinds. Reduction of negative impacts of physical-engineering quantities on the environment (noise, vibration, ionizing radiation, heat, etc.). Waste handling, wasteless technologies. Interrelations and consequences between economics, power engineering and ecology in industrial activities. Minimization of impacts of major industrial sectors on the environment.

Summary

This subject consists of a two thematic part. The target of the first thematic part is introducing students with present using industrial technologies. There is about energetic and material analyses in industry and also in the all society. Main attention are saving while biosphere extraction and also reducing of energy intensity of different productive procedures. The target of the second thematic part is introducing students with environmental technologies.

Subject syllabus:

1. Technical iron: raw iron, soft iron. Production of raw iron: blast furnace, raw materials for the production of raw iron, blast furnace products. Environmental impact of raw iron production. 2. Production of steel in flame furnaces, in electric furnaces and convertors. Steel casting. Environmental impact of steel production. Production of cast iron: grey cast, and other types of cast iron. 3. Warm working of metals: rolling of flat and shaped materials and tin, production of tubes, seamless pipes, wire pulling. Warming furnaces, types of rolling mills. 4. Forging, pressing, cutting. Environmental impact of metal forging. Surface finish of metals. 5. Alloying. Casting under pressure, centrifugal casting, tilting casting. Casting using the method of castable and combustible models, casting into shell forms. Cleaning and finish of casts. Environmental impact of foundry processes. 6. Basics of machine working. Turning, drilling and boring, milling, grinding, planing and shaping. Environmental impact of mechanical engineering. 7. Underground mining and its environmental impact. Environmental impact of surface mining. Coking. Environmental impact of coking. 8. Thermal power engineering: conversion of energy in thermal power plants, types of steam boilers. Environmental impact of thermal power engineering. Technologies to reduce solid and gas emissions from power engineering. Nuclear power engineering: nuclear power plant (nuclear reactors, nuclear fuel cycle, used fuel management). Environmental impact of nuclear power plants. 9. Hydropower plants: classification of water turbines. Environmental impact of hydropower plants. Wind farms, biogas plants and solar power plants and the environmental impacts. 10. Transport: exhalations of combustion engines. Possible reductions in emissions from road transport. Alternative fuels and drives for road vehicles. 11. Large-volume inorganic productions of basic chemical substances: production of technical gas, production of ammonia, acids, hydroxides (lyes) and carbides. Production of industrial fertilisers, pigments, cement and lime, glass, and ceramic materials. Metallurgy of non-iron metals. Environmental impact of selected inorganic productions. 12. Organic productions of basic chemical substances. Organic production of nitrogen compounds, halogenated compounds and sulphur compounds. Environmental impact of chemical organic plants. 13. Oil processing industry (refinery) – oil distillation (atmospheric and vacuum), production of base oil. Refining processes and most important environmental problems. 14. Food-processing industry: production of malt, beer, wine, ethanol and yeast. Production of organic acids, sugar and starch. Agricultural breeding and processing of its production, milk processing. Environmental impact of food-processing industry.
