Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

By the end of the Geographic Information System subject students should be able to: Knowledge and Comprehension - discuss what term a GIS means - explain what components is GIS divided into - describe functionality and the use of GIS in a range of applications - outline diferent concepts of space - explain ways of modelling real-world phenomena using raster and vector - appreciate the raster and vector data model - name and describe the basic vector objects - express the basic ideas of topology - relate the concepts of networks and graphs - define 3 structures for storing vector data - describe the adjacency matrix and how to find shortest paths - explain what discretisation error is - review regular and irregular tessellations of space - appreciate the problems of raster to vector conversion (and vice versa) - name, order and describe the steps necessary to carry out a GIS project - list the types and sources of errors present in spatial data - know on what Krovak projection and S-JTSK is based - identify sources of spatial data - discuss the basic concepts relating to remote sensing Application - use some software in realistic applications (ArcGIS, Geomedia, GRASS GIS, Open Jump, ...) Analysis - differentiate between GIS packages (ArcGIS, Geomedia, GRASS GIS, Open Jump, ...) according to their abilities (both in data structures and algorithms)
