Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Basic terms of thematic cartography. Thematic cartography, thematic map. Thematic map elements, map composition. Using colours in thematic maps. Qualitative and quantitative methods of thematic cartography. Thematic maps of the Czech republic overview. Digital cartography and thematic maps in WWW environment. Digital cartography - spatial data visualization. Laboratory exposure to techniques of computer mapping in thematic cartography.

Summary

Introduction to thematic cartography, kinds of map, topographic cartography, thematic map, thematic mapping, uses of thematic map. Fundamentals of mathematical cartography. Content of thematic map and map composition. Language of map, cartography semiology, map legend, legend design. Descriptive statistics, statistic data classification. Principles of using colours in thematic maps. Qualitative methods of thematic mapping. Quantitative methods of thematic mapping. Thematic map lettering. Classification of thematic map. State maps and thematic state maps of the Czech Republic. Digital cartography, spatial data visualization. Electronic publishing of maps and atlases. Cartographical possibilities of GeoWeb technology.

Conditions for subject completion and attendance at the exercises within ISP: Instead of attending lectures, it is necessary to study the materials that are given for the course. In order to receive credit, the student must complete three separate tasks (according to the lecturer's assignment) and participate in the credit test in person on a date agreed with the lecturer.
