- student will be able to use terms - data, information, metadata, - student will know structure o information systems - student will know principles of information systems functioning - student will know basic facts about geographical information systems - student will have an overview about information systems useful for environmental protection.

Teaching methods



The goal of the subject is to show students information systems. Basic terminology of information systems is presented in the beginning. Commonly used information systems are presented next. Next part provides students with knowledge about information systems’ structure and their internal functionality. Final part of the subject is focused on information systems which can be used as a source of the environmental data.

Subject syllabus:

1st Week Introductory lesson. To acquaint students with the content of the course. Training on safety principles and work in the computer lab. Communication conditions for granting credit and testing. 2nd Week Basic concepts of information systems issues. Explanation of basic concepts related to the issue of information systems. Explanation of the concept of an information system, examples of information systems, which is commonly encountered and are commonly used. Explanation of terms data, information, metadata. Examples describing the difference between data and information. Examples of metadata and displays the importance of metadata in solving practical problems. 3rd Week The structure of information systems. Description of the basic structure of a digital information system. The description and explanation of the importance of the individual components of an information system. Description of impact on the functioning of information systems and organizational structure of enterprises and organizations. Comparison of intensity and price purchase essential elements of information systems. Comparison of length of life of the individual components of information systems. 4th Week Data models. Explanation of the concept of data model and its correspondence to the issue of information systems. Explanation of basic principles of the hierarchical data models. Sample examples of hierarchical data models. Explanation of the functioning of the network data models. Sample examples of network data models. Explanation of basic principles of the relational data models. Sample examples of relational data models. Sample preparation of the relational data model. Comparison of the types described data models, their advantages and disadvantages. 5th Week Analog and digital data. Explanation of the concept of analog data. A general description of the analog data acquisition. Examples of making and recording of analog data - thermograph, gramophone, magnetic tape. Explanation of the concept of digital data. A general description of the recording of digital data. Explanation of terms bit, byte binary number. Ways to record numbers, symbols, colors, images and sound. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using analog and digital data. An example is described by comparing analog and digital transmission of TV signals. 6th Week The history of computer technology. Samples and machinery and equipment, which preceded the emergence of computers. Explanation limitations of their use. Description of the problems that led to the first computers. The first computers and their operating principles. Tube computer. Computers with semiconductor chips. Computer Revolution. The principle of operation of computer networks and the Internet. Hypertext, WorldWideWeb, the Internet bubble, Web 2.0. 7th Week Principles of operation of computers. Problems of the first computers. Von Neumann Computer Structure - diagram of basic computer components. Their relationships and communication. Principles of operation of computers by Von Neumann. Alternative functioning computers different from the von Neumann structure. 8th Week Information systems with generally applicable information. Description and structure of the Public Administration Portal. Example of information available from this information system. Description and structure of the Commercial Register. Description and structure of the business register. Introduction to search for publications and articles in the resources available through the Library of VSB-TUO. 9th Week The Law on Free Access to Information. The basic outline of the Act No. 106/1999 Coll. The free access to information. Options and restricted access to the information herein. Relationship of this Act to the environment. Generally, the published data related to the environment. 10th Week Information systems to provide access to published data on the environment. Basic facts about the Act No. 100/2001 Coll. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). EIA Information System description and system structure. Description and structure of the Air Quality Information System (AQIS). Description and structure of an integrated register of polluters (IPR). 11th Week Reporting of environmental data. Mandatory reporting of environmental performance. Ways to influence reporting and information systems to help respondents with these acts. Reporting of data necessary details. Reporting data to the register of sources of air pollution. Reporting data on waste. Reporting data to the operating summary. Reporting data in the Integrated registry of polluters. 12th Week Czech Environmental Information Agency (CENIA). Areas of government provided CENIA. Organizational Structure CENIA. Information systems operated, maintained and provided CENIA. Note: This course is implemented in consultation CENIA staff. 13th Week Geographic Information Systems. Explanation of the concept of geographic information system (GIS). The difference between GIS and general information systems. Spatial data and information. The structure of spatial data. Implementation of spatial analysis. Commercially available geographic information systems and their applications. 14th Week Models and modeling. Explanation of terms model and simulation. Examples showing the general widespread use of models. Explanation of the difference between physical and abstract models. Examples showing the difference in the functioning of these two categories of models. Mathematical models as a special case of abstract models. The limits of mathematical models and mathematical models of errors. Summary of recommendations for their use. Mathematical models of phenomena related to the environment. Lesson content: - Test build relational data model for information system model - Presentation of the operation of selected information systems students. - Model practical examples of reporting of environmental data.
