The topic of our approach is to emphasize the relationship between structure and reactivity of the most important groups of organic compounds. Regular lectures are in Czech language, individual consulting and examination may be taken in English.

Summary

In fourteen lectures from Organic chemistry is discussed structure and reactivity of saturated, unsaturated aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons and their functional derivatives: derivatives of halogens, derivatives of nitrogen, derivatives of sulfure, derivatives of oxygen (alcohols, phenols, ethers, carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids and derivatives of carboxylic acids).

Subject syllabus:

1. Introduction to Organic Chemistry. Short history. Binding properties of carbon atom (molecular orbitals, sigma- and pi- bonds, bond dissociation energy, bond polarity, hybridization, electron effects). Seminary: Binding properties of carbon 2.Principles of the stereochemistry of organic compounds and writting structures (types of formulas and models). Polymerism and isomerism (constitutional- and stereo-isomers, chirality). Conformation. Seminary: Structure, formula, model, obtaining structural information from molecular formulas.Practice to the determining the type of isomerism. 3.System and nomenclature of organic chemistry. Organic compounds classification. Principles of the IUPAC nomenclature. Seminary: Exercises to principles of IUPAC nomenclature. 4.Intermolecular forces. The relationship between the structure and the properties of substances (boiling and melting points, solubility). Seminary: Practice problems to the principles of IUPAC nomenclature. 5.Reactions of organic compounds and their mechanism. Classification of Organic Reactions. Homolysis and heterolysis of carbon bonds. Radical, electrophilic and nucleophilic species. Molecularity, order and mechanism of the reaction. Reaction energetics and the theory of transition state (energy of activation, free-energy diagrams, reaction heat). Seminary: Practice problems to the lecture 6.Alifatic and alicyclic saturated hydrocarbons.Radical substitution. Cracking (noncatalysed and catalyzed) and isomerisation. Hydrocarbon resources and their use. Seminary: Nomenclature of hydrocarbons 7.Unsaturated hydrocarbons. Radical and ion additions to multiple bonds. Elimination reactions. Resources and industrial use of unsaturated hydrocarbons. Seminary: Practice to the nomenclature of hydrocarbons 8.Aromatic hydrocarbons. Theory of the aromaticity. Reactions of aromatic compounds (nitration, sulfonation, alkylation, acylation, oxidation, catalytic hydrogenation). Petrochemical and coal-tar sources of aromatic hydrocarbons. Industrial utilization. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their toxicological risk. Seminary: Nomenclature of aromatic hydrocarbons 9. Derivatives of hydrocarbons. Halogen and hydroxy derivatives. Ethers. Properties, toxicology, applications and the most important reactions. Seminary: Nomenclature of derivatives 10.Nitrogen derivatives (nitro compounds, amines, heterocycles). Reactivity, properties, toxicology. Heterocyclic compounds. Seminary: Nomenclature of nitrogen derivatives 11.Carbonyl compounds. Reactivity ( oxidation, reduction and addition to carbonyl group). Preparation and use. Seminary: Nomenclature of aldehydes and ketones. 12.Carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Acidity versus structure, neutralization. Reactivity of the carboxylic group (esterification, decarboxylation). Industrially the most important acids and their utilization. Seminary: Practice to the nomenclature 13. Substitution derivatives of carboxylic acids.Halogen and hydroxy acids. Lactones.Amino acids. Lactams. Reactivity, properties, application. Seminary: Practice to the nomenclature 14. Functional derivatives of acids. Acyl halides. Anhydride. Esters. Amides. Nitriles.Reactivity, properties, toxicology, applications. Synthesis and applications.Derivatives of the carbonic acid (phosgene, urea and their sulfur analogues). Seminary: Practice to the nomenclature
