Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

This subject is focused on the thermochemical breakdown and associated thermal reactions of solid fuels during their coking, liquefaction, gasification and combustion. Regular instruction in Czech. Individual consulting and examination may be taken in English.

Subject syllabus:

1. Coal, its current utilization and prospects from the perspective of the world economy. 2.Resent knowledge about the structure of coal substance. Coal petrography. Relationship between coal properties and its range. 3.Texture of coal. The porous structure of coal. The adsorption of gases on the coal surface. 4.Combustion of coal. Self-combustion. Environmental aspects of coal combustion. Green house effect. Sequestration of CO2. 5. Theory of carbonization process. Kinetics and thermodynamics of production of metallurgical coke.Interpretation of the plastic properties of coal (metaplast theory, mesophase development). 6. Coking process. Criteria for coking coals and coal blending. Laboratory tests to assess the plastic and sweling properties of coals. Chemistry of coal tar and pitch. 7.Construction of coke oven, coking cycle (charging, heating, pushing, quenching). Ecological aspects of coke production.Coke quality and its prediction. 8.Gasification of coal. Chemical principle and current technologies. C1 chemistry. Fischer Tropsch synthesis. 9.Interaction of coal with solvents. Coal Liquefaction.Key reactions in coal liquefaction. Catalysts, types of catalyst usage, the role of solvent.
