The purpose of the discipline is the study of chemical reactions between the soil, water, air and the effects of human activities upon these systems.

Lectures

Summary

A general introduction to chemistry of lithosphere, acid-base and ion exchange reactions in soil. Fundamentals of aquatic chemistry, reactions in natural waters and wastewaters. Photochemical reactions in the athmosphere, pollutants, photochemical smog. Introduction to ecotoxicology.

Compulsory literature:

Manahan S.E.: Environmental chemistry, Lewis publ., London 2000.

Recommended literature:

After an agreement with lecturer.

Subject syllabus:

General issues of environmental chemistry. Soil chemistry - acid-base and exchange reactions. Chemical and photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. Introduction to water chemistry. Global biogeochemical cycles in the biosphere. Stratospheric and tropospheric ozone. Metals in the environment. Natural resources and energy. Environmentally friendly use of coal. Environmental aspects of nuclear energy. Radioactive substances in the environment. Chemistry of hazardous substances. Introduction to general toxicology. Introduction to special toxicology. Trends in environmental chemistry.
