The aim of the subject is providing informations allowing students to articulate: • Basic principles of coal preparation, • Principles of contolling in coal preparation technologies • Ecological and economical aspects of coal utilization in metallurgy

Summary

Coal, its origin and properties. The role of coal in the new metallurgical technologies. Theoretical introduction into physical methods of the coal treatment (separation, flotation, grinding, drainage, milling, mixing). Technology and equipment for the coal treatment. Preparation of coal for the coke production from theoretical and practical point of view. Ekological and economic aspects of the coal utilization (current status and the future).

Subject syllabus:

1.Origin of coal and its major world resources. current status and the future in the global economy. 2. Utilization of coal in metalurgy. 3. Physical, chemical and physico-chemical properties of coal. Requirements for the specific characteristics of coal used in the metallurgical coke production. 4. Theoretical introduction in physical methods of the coal treatment. 5. Separation of coal by use of gravity, flotation and drainage. Technology, equipment and water management. 6. Milling and grinding technology and equipment. Special preparation of coal for the coking process. 7. Preparation of coal blends. Mixing and dispensing, technology and equipment. 8. Contemporary theories of coke making process in terms of achieving the optimal coke properties. 9. Models for determining of the coal blends composition (statistical methods and neural network methods). 10. Coal drying and overheating. 11. Utilization of brown coal in metallurgy. Experience and perspectives of the new technologies in pig iron production. 12.Utilization of pulverized coal in metallurgy as a reducing agent and carburiser. 13.Ekological aspects of the coal utilization in metallurgy. Clean Coal Technology. 14.Ekonomic aspects and perspectives of the coal utilization in world and in the Czech Republic.
