Summary
Introduction to macromolecular chemistry. Structure and nomenclature of polymers. Relationships
between structure and properties of polymers. Rheology and polymer processing. The most important aspects of industrial polymers their production, properties and application areas. Degradation and stabilisation of polymers. Natural macromolecular materials. Inorganic polymers. Composite
materials with polymer matrix.

Subject syllabus:
1.Introduction into macromolecular chemistry (history, importance for modern society, resources). Nomenclature of polymers.
2.Structure of macromolecular substances (chain, linear, branched and cross-linked
polymers,homo-and copolymers, stereoisomerism, configurations, methods of structural studies).
3.Structure vers. basic properties (molecular weight, polydispersity, mechanical properties, phase behavior, dissolution, swelling and rheological behavior of polymer solutions,
electrical and optical properties)
4.Synthesis of polymers (polymerization, polycondensation, polyaddition, copolymerization)
5.Technological principes of polymer production (solution, suspension and emulsion polymerization)
6.The most important groups of polymers (manufacture, properties, applications).
7.Natural makromolecular materials (rubber, polysaccharides, proteins) and inorganic polymers
9.Modifiers (plasticizers, stabilizers,
blowing agents, cross-linking agents, flame retardants)
10.Polymer processing (plastikace, forming, molding, spinning,
foam material, casting)
11.Resistence, corrosion and degradation of polymers (resistance to the natural environment
mechanical resistance, resistance to chemical attack).
12.Ekological and economic aspects of production and application of polymers. Processing of the polymer waste. Biodegradable polymers.
13.Modern trends in macromolecular chemistry and polymer production.
