Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

Students will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in complicated calculations and visualizations carried out on PC using MS Excel. The calculations will be focused to classical analytical chemisty as well as instrumental analysis. The main advantage of this approach is practical application of easily available MS Excel (there is no need to use other specialized SW).

Teaching methods

Individual consultations

Summary

The main advantage is the practical application of readily available MS Excel without having to purchase other specialized programs (and including without knowledge of the Java programming language).

Subject syllabus:

The subject Calculations in analytical chemistry using MS Excel is focused on complicated calculations in the field of classical and instrumental analytical chemistry. Particular attention is paid to: Calculation of chemical equilibrium and equilibrium concentrations of given species. Construction of distribution diagrams for individual species in the solution (in dependence on pH, amount of added ligand etc.) Calculations and construction of titration curves and their evaluation using various mathematic methods (including selection of the most suitable indicator). More complex calculations in the field of instrumental analysis (e.g., peak interferences). Utilization of MS Excel in statistical evaluation of measured data. MS Excel will be used with particular attention drawn to simulations of various effects on equilibrium concentrations, acid-base behaviour, reaction kinetics, titration curves, distribution diagrams etc. (including graphical illustration, which allows to inspect the studied effects visually).
