Subject aims expressed by acquired skills and competences

The subject represents a deeper theoretical basis necessary for understanding the properties of selected types of substances and the laws of processes in which these substances may participate. It contains selected chapters and topics of general, inorganic, organic and analytical chemistry. The subject deepens knowledge about the relationships between chemical bonds, structure and hazardous properties of selected substances and compounds. It provides an overview of the properties of substances that can be used for their identification, safe processing or disposal, storage and transport.

Summary

Evaluation of the course of chemical reactions (rate of chemical reaction, the effect of temperature on the reaction rate, catalysis, chemical equilibrium, energetic changes in chemical reactions). Relationship between structure and properties of substances (physicochemical, toxicological properties). Burning as a redox process. Combustion products and their toxicological properties. Pyrophoric metals. Dangerous gases. Extinguishing agents based on organic molecules. Technically important groups of substances (production, use, ecological and toxicological characteristics). Analytical methods for the determination of these substances.

Subject syllabus:

1. Evaluation of the course of chemical reactions and factors influencing the spontaneity of chemical reactions (rate of chemical reaction, the effect of temperature on the reaction rate, catalysis, chemical equilibrium, energetic changes in chemical reactions). 2. Burning as a redox process. Thermodynamic stability of oxidation states. Principles of self-ignition and self-ignition. Auto-ignition due to biochemical processes. Properties affecting the flammability of substances. 3. Combustion products and their toxicological properties. Pyrophoric metals. Dangerous gases. 4. Extinguishing agents based on organic molecules - halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons and wetting agents (anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants). Preparation and use of these substances, the relationship between their structure and properties, ecological and toxicological characteristics. 5. Selected analytical procedures and methods used to identify substances and monitor their thermal stability. Spectral analysis and chromatography. 6. Water chemistry. Occurrence and treatment of water. Physical properties and reactivity of water. Properties important in firefighting technology. 7. Technically important inorganic and organic substances (production, use, ecological and toxicological characteristics). Relationship between the structure of substances and their physicochemical and toxicological properties.
