Summary
Subject is focused on theoretical aspects of non-ferrous metals, iron and steel production by present technological methods. Attention is paid to non-ferrous metals production by pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes, to pig iron production including alternative ways of its production, and to technology of steel production, refining and casting.

Subject syllabus:
Lecture
First part - Non-ferrous Metallurgy
1. Metals, technical classification of metals, production of nonferrous metals in the Czech Republic. Raw materials for nonferrous metallurgy. Basic metallurgical processes - overview.
2. Pyrometallurgical processes, drying, calcination, roasting process, melting and products.
3. Hydrometallurgical processes - characterization. Adsorption, ion exchange, extraction and cementation in hydrometallurgy. Electrolysis, basic patterns, metals produced by electrolysis.
4. Overview – production technology of copper, lead, zinc, nickel, aluminium, noble metals and other selected metals.
Second part - Ironmaking
1. Characteristics of the development of iron and steel in the world and in CR. Energy and raw limit further development. Main drawbacks of the present-day technology of iron production.
2. Theoretical principles of the pig iron production. Properties of iron ores, sinters, pellets, coke, fluxes and metallurgical fuels. Quality control of pig iron. Optimal consumption of coke.
3. Thermodynamic, kinetic and thermal processes of blast furnace combustion zone. Basic reactions in blast furnace. Iron oxides reduction. Direct and indirect reduction.
4. Distribution of alternative technologies in the field of direct reduction and smelting reduction. Basic charakteristics threats technological processes. Comparisons with conventional blast furnace production.
The third part - Steelmaking
1. The history of steel production. Current methods of steel production. Steel reaction, theory of slag, deoxidation of steel.
2. Production of steel in oxygen converters and electric furnaces.
3. Secondary metallurgy and vacuum metallurgy.
4. Continuous casting of steel, tundish metallurgy.
Exercise (Only full-time study form)
First part – Non-ferrous Metallurgy
1. Periodic system of elements, metals, technical classification of nonferrous metals, alloys, fineness, their typical properties and applications.
2. Stoichiometric and technological calculations.
3. Electrometallurgical calculations, electrolytic dissolution and deposition of metals.
The second part - Iron Metallurgy
1. Basic principles of blast furnace process, calculations from chemical equations
2. Calculation of the theoretical reducing gas consumption, the semestral work No.1
3. The amount of top gas in blast furnace (carbon balance)
4. Elaboration of final test
The third part - Steelmaking
1. Steel Standards.
2. Calculation of element oxidation during steel manufacturing.
3. Desulphurization and dephosphorization of steel, gases in steel.
4. Test, credit.
