- student will be able to characterize basic terms from field metallurgy -student will be able formulate to basic reduction processes during ironmaking. - student will be able to characterize basic terms problems of steel production in steelmaking aggregates

Summary

Subject consists of two parts : Ironmaking and steelmaking. The first part of subject is read with the purpose to outline basic contextures and structure of metallurgical aggregates in sphere of metallurgical basic industry. The second part of subject contains steelmaking slags, oxidising processes, production in steelmaking aggregates, charge materials, secondary metallurgy of steel, steel casting.

Subject syllabus:

LECTURES Part 1- Ironmaking 1.Theoretical processes in blast furnace.Basic response characteristics of ore, sinter, pellets, coke. 2.Charge and processes in blast furnace, basic principles in blast furnace 3.Theoretical reducing gas consumption. Physico-chemical reactions in blast furnace. 4.Quality control of pig iron in blast furnace.Pig iron grades. 5.Alternative methods of pig iron production.Direct reduction. 6.Trends and innovative in blast furnace processes 7. Ecological problems of pig iron production, BAT technology Part 2- Steelmaking 1. Affinity of elements to oxygen. Distribution of oxygen between slag and metal. Steelmaking slags. 2. Theory of reactions running at steelmaking and steel refining: Oxidation of Si and Mn, transfer of oxygen from atmosphere into hot metal. Dephosphorisation of steel. Desulphurisation of steel. Carbon reaction. 3. Steelmaking in basic oxygen furnaces (BOF) - LD converter, OBM converter. Steelmaking in tandem, electric and SM furnaces. 4. Theoretical basis of steel deoxidation. Methods of deoxidation. Cleanness of steel. 5. Main procedures of steel treatment by secondary metallurgy and their effects. 6.Casting of steel into ingot moulds. Top pouring and bottom pouring. Crystallisation and solidification of steel, segregation. 7.Continuous casting of steel, classification, advantages, disadvantages, economics. Design of continuous casting machine (CCM). Praktice Part 1- Ironmaking 1. Introduction, definition of key variables and concept, special excursion-Geological Collections 2. Calculations of the iron amount from different charge types 3. Calculation of the quantity of alkaline additives in the blast furnace charge, data for individual semestral work No1 4. Calculation of the amount of top gas and the amount of dry wind blowing. 5. Partial elemental carbon balance in the blast furnace, determining the amount of carbon burned at the tuyeres and carbon for direct reduction, data for individual semestral work No2 6. Material balance blast furnace process, the determination of direct and indirect reduction, data for paper presentation 7. The actual presentation of results and discussion, final test Part 2- Steelmaking 1.Standards of steel, examples. 2.Reactions between metal and slag, decarburisation of steel, calculations. 3.Reactions of desulphurisation, dephosphorisation and decarburisation of steel, examples, calculations. 4.Calculation of material and thermal balance of LD process. 5.Plant tour. 6.Video-programs – steelmaking and treatment of steel by secondary metallurgy, EAF, CCM. 7.Evaluation of exercises, credit.
