Summary

1) First part of subject is read with aim to outline study of basic relations and structures of metallurgy aggregates in metallurgy original production area. In harmony with actual tendency attention is paid also to automatic equipment, ecology problems and alternative methods of hot metal production. 2) the second part of subject is read with aim to know steelmaking problems. Survey and development of metallurgy processes, steelmaking slags, oxidisation processes, steel de-O, steelmaking in converters, tandem and electric furnaces, secondary metallurgy of steel, casting, solidification and crystallization of steel.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures: 1) Properties of ores, sinter, pellets, coke, alkaline admixtures and methods of their determination. Theoretical basis of physical-chemical processes at sintering and pelletisation. 2) Charging of blast furnace (BF), distribution of charge on blast furnace top. Normal, external and internal furnace operation. 3) Physical and chemical processes in BF. Thermo-dynamic, kinetic and thermal processes in oxidation zone of BF. Reduction of iron oxides in BF. 4) BF slag. BF blast. Enrichment of blast by oxygen and moistening of blast. 5) Technology of injection of added media. 6) Torpedo ladles. 7) Affinity of elements to oxygen. Distribution of oxygen between slag and metal. Steelmaking slags. 8) Theory of reactions running at steelmaking and steel refining: Oxidation of Si and Mn, transfer of oxygen from atmosphere into hot metal. Dephosphorisation of steel. Desulphurisation of steel. Carbon reaction. 9) Steelmaking in basic oxygen furnaces (BOF) - LD converter, OBM converter. Steelmaking in tandem, electric and SM furnaces. 10) Theoretical basis of steel deoxidation. Methods of deoxidation. Cleanness of steel. 11) Main procedures of steel treatment by secondary metallurgy and their effects. 12) Casting of steel into ingot moulds. Top pouring and bottom pouring. Crystallisation and solidification of steel, segregation. 13) Numerical simulation of solidification of ingots (use the ProCAST - the influence of various factors on the process of solidification and the occurrence of segregation). 14) Continuous casting of steel, classification, advantages, disadvantages, economics. Design of continuous casting machine (CCM). Tundish metallurgy. New directions in casting of thin blanks. Exercises. Part 1) 1. Calculation of free alkali and quantity of admixtures to ore. 2. Calculation of quantity of coke in charge and admixtures to coke. 3. Calculation of volume of blast and volume of top gas. 4. Partial balances of mass at blast furnace (BF) process. 5. Overall balance of BF process. 6. Calculation of main economic indexes of BF production. 7. Calculation of material and thermal balance of COREX technology. Part 2) 1. Standards of steel, examples. 2. Reactions between metal and slag, decarburisation of steel, calculations. 3. Reactions of desulphurisation, dephosphorisation and decarburisation of steel, examples, calculations. 4. Calculation of material and thermal balance of LD process. 5. Plant tour or video-programs – steelmaking and treatment of steel by secondary metallurgy, EAF, CCM. 6.
