Summary

Subject is read with the aim to explain both theoretical principle and also technological applications of oxidising processes proceeding at steel production by basic as well as acid method, further problems of steel deoxidisation and steel cleanness.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures 1. Overview, importance and perspectives of steelmaking. - Historical development of steelmaking technologies. - Classification of steels and steel products. 2. Physical-chemical fundament of steelmaking in alkaline and acid environment. - Refractories used in steelmaking aggregates. - Steelmaking in LD converters. - Characteristics of converter. 3. Charge, development of refining processes, mode of oxygen blowing. - Lime used for steelmaking - physical and chemical properties. - Slag mode of heat. 4. Thermal mode of heat. - Static and dynamic model of control of heat in LD converter. - Treatment of pig iron with higher content of phosphorus (processes OLP, LD-P, PL, KALDO, Rotor). 5. Steelmaking in bottom blown converters. - Processes OBM (Q-BOP), OXYVIT. - Characteristics of converter. 6. Nozzles, thermal protection of nozzles, blown media. - Charge. - Refining processes – differences from LD converter. 7. Formation and importance of slag. - Comparison of OBM and LD converter. - Steelmaking in tandem furnaces. 8. Development of tandem furnace and its design. - Charge and technology of control of heat. - Blowing of oxygen, thermal and slag mode of heat. 9. Advantages and drawbacks of tandem furnaces. - Steelmaking in SM furnaces. - Historical importance, characteristics of furnaces, process variants. 10. Pig iron mixers. - Deoxidation of steel, physical-chemical principle and importance of deoxidation of steel, overview of methods. - Deoxidation and alloying of steel. 11. Coagulating deoxidation of steel. - Diffusion deoxidation of steel. - Deoxidation of steel by synthetic slag. 12. Vacuum carbon deoxidation of steel. - Non-metallic inclusions in steel, distribution of non-metallic inclusions. 13. Oxidic and sulphidic inclusions, nitrides, carbides. - Changes of chemical composition and shape of inclusions in dependence on Al content. 14. Modification of inclusions. - Joining and floating of inclusions from steel.
