- student will be able to define processes proceeding at molten steel refining - student will be able to explain substance of steel refining in the ladle - student will be able to formulate using possibilities for individual variants of secondary metallurgy

Summary

The subject explains theoretical principles of processes running at refining of liquid steel in a ladle, principles of refining technologies and equipment for ladle metallurgy. Refining of steel by inert gases. Vacuum refining of steel. Refining of steel by synthetic slag. Technology for production of stainless steels . Special refining technologies.

Subject syllabus:

Lectures 1. Causes of development of secondary metallurgy methods. 2. Principal procedures of processing of steel by secondary metallurgy and its effects. 3. Elements related to production and refining of steel. 4. Gases in steel – thermodynamics, mechanism and kinetics of dissolution of H2 and N2. 5. Thermodynamics and mechanism of steel degassing. 6. Dissolving of oxygen in steel – thermodynamics and mechanism. 7. Conditions for flotation of inclusions by an inert gas – absorption of inclusions by slag. 8. Refining of steel by inert gases – effects – methods of execution. 9. Vacuum refining of steel – nucleation of gaseous bubbles – diffusion of gas atoms toward surface. 10. Technologies of secondary metallurgy vacuum treatment of steel, including appropriate equipment. 11. Conditions for production of stainless steels – thermodynamics of deep decarburisation of steel with high content of chromium – technology for production of stainless steels. 12. Refining of steel by synthetic slags – thermodynamic conditions for refining – mechanism and kinetics of refining – technologies for refining of steel by liquid and solid synthetic slag – used slags – characteristics. 13. Ladles furnaces – their importance of treatment of steel by secondary metallurgy – classification of ladle furnaces – possibilities of ladle furnaces. 14. Injection of cored wires and aluminium wires into steel – reasons, technologies.
